In an effort to boost safety and awareness among bicyclists in the Sunshine State, the Florida Bicycle Association, Bike/Walk Central Florida, and the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization have joined forces to develop an invaluable resource: the Pocket Guide for Informed Bicycling in Florida. The quick-reference guide, developed with financial support from New Belgium Brewing, will provide bicyclists across Florida with essential knowledge about their legal protections and responsibilities.

For more than two decades, the Florida Bicycle Association and Bike Florida have devoted their efforts to transforming the Sunshine State into a place where residents and vacationers can pedal with confidence, whether they are cycling to work, school, a park, or the beach, or simply enjoying the scenic wonders of the Sunshine State. The two non-profits pursue their missions through a blend of education, technical support, safety training, advocacy, and informational tours.

Nearly 100 advocates and professionals working for safe and accessible bicycling came together the weekend of October 14 in Winter Garden to discuss the state’s most pressing bikeability issues during the Florida Bicycle Association’s annual meeting.

On March 1, 2021, a distracted — or homicidal — motorist with a history of driving infractions hit me from behind while I was riding my bike. I spent five weeks in the hospital with a shattered pelvis, a splintered scapula and a traumatic brain injury. Twenty months later, my hip pain is constant. I walk with a limp. Only recently can I even bend over to pick something off the floor.
