196 people on bicycles and 683 pedestrians were killed on Florida traffic in 2024.

Every day, nine people die on Florida’s roadways—six of those deaths are linked to distracted driving.

34% of Florida drivers were distracted by phones seconds before crashing.

Just 5 extra seconds of phone use per hour caused 3,500 crashes and $84 million in damages last year.

6 out of 9 daily roadway deaths are linked to distracted driving.

Outdated Laws, Real Consequences

Florida’s current law bans only texting while driving—not scrolling, streaming, or GPS use.

HB 501 (Hands-Free Florida) would close these loopholes—but it needs your voice to pass.

What We’re Doing:

  • $500 grants for schools across Florida to teach safe biking/driving through interactive quizzes.

  • 120+ advocates mobilized at the 2024 Florida Bicycle Summit to dismantle barriers to bike-friendly communities.

Lives Impacted

  • David McGrinn, a U.S. veteran and Paralympic cyclist was killed in 2019 while training in Orlando. His wife, Carly, and his mother, Cheryl, joined the coalition to share his story, reminding us why this work is necessary and urgent.

  • At Florida Bicycle, we receive reports every week of a person on a bike being killed by a person in a motor vehicle. In 2023 alone, 234 people were killed while bicycling in the Sunshine State. This isn’t okay. We don’t accept that if you’re cycling in Florida, you’ve given up your rights and your humanity. This is why Florida Bicycle and community partners work for safer streets, more off-street paths, and stronger policies … to make Florida better for people who want to bicycle and for people who need to bicycle.

  • Fran was on her bike in Sebring on the morning of March 24, 2024, when she was struck and killed by a motorist who then fled. Fran’s family is left to make sense of the tragedy while Florida’s legal system decides how to proceed. The Florida Bicycle Association is standing firmly alongside Fran’s family as they pursue justice and try to prevent similar tragedies from striking other families.

  • Marine Corps Veteran George Lamb, who sustained a traumatic brain injury, transformed his life from spending his days on the couch to earning gold medals for his achievements in cycling with the Adaptive Sports Program.

  • Hit-and-run driver sought in deadly bicycle crash in Orange County

    Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash that happened Tuesday night on Sand Lake Road in Orange County.

  • Vero Beach bicyclist fatally struck in hit-and-run crash Friday night

    March 7, 2025

    The body of a 58-year-old Vero Beach man was found in a ditch late Friday after he was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene, deputies said. The man was taken to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
