Temple Terrace Self-Guided History

I admire those that are finding ways around the pandemic to offer the community healthy ways to enjoy the outdoors. One such activity was found in the City of Temple Terrace, a history bike ride promoted by Bike/Walk Tampa Bay to not only to get outside and ride during Florida Bicycle Month, but to learn about the area and have fun. There were even prizes for completion (while supplies lasted, of course).

The Map – although fair warning, C is slightly out of place

Fortunately for me, I know a cycling buddy, Grace Stewart, who lives in Temple Terrace and offered to play ride-guide while we explored the town. Along with another cycling buddy, Wayne Baird, we not only found all the historic markers (again, C was a challenge until you realized it is not placed on the map correctly), but we read both sides of the marker and rode away with new knowledge after each one.

Temple Terrace resident Grace Stewart guided me and fellow cycling buddy Wayne through the historic spots, starting with the Largest Orange Grove in the World!

There are five historic markers in all, and the loop is no more than eight miles total. I say that, but it’s probably more like seven or so. We were following the map and got a little back-tracked looking for C, but when we finally figured it out, we got a good laugh as we realized we rode right by it.

For those following the map, there’s a level of joy in finding C

The beauty of this ride is that the history is there just waiting to be discovered. Use the map as your guide, just move C a little northeast, and you may just ride away with an enriching tour of Temple Terrace history. Be sure to read both sides of the marker for the full story and enjoy the quiet back roads, the scenic rolling hills and if you bring along cycling buddies, the fun of friendship. We had a great time!

Only an April Fool would think the riding is over now that Florida Bicycle Month has ended, right? Sign up for the Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach Spring Bike Challenge and keep rolling towards National Bike Month in May!
