Could it have something to do with the crazy erratic driving we see when florida motorists are texting on their cell phones when driving.
Also the failure of local and state government to recognize, national and international statistics on cell phone use while driving.

The Florida Bicycle Month from Charlie Crist is another way to get his face in the newspaper and on tv. There is nothing new in it and the fact that local government, so called elected official, are making decisions means that personal and financial interest will have priority.
Let's invite Charlie Crist for a bike ride from Dade-Broward county to the Keys. I remember reading that a kids and a mom got fined for riding their bikes to school! Really wonder what Charlie is talking about.

"Pedestrians are not paying attention to traffic, or they’re crossing the street midblock instead of going to the intersection."

Frankly I see more opportunity to get plastered at an intersection than crossing midblock. You only have to keep an eye on cars from two directions rather than 4.

The problem of unlicensed motorists (whether suspended or revoked) is one FBA is addressing through it's Alternative Transportation Education program. Motorists with suspended licenses and otherwise problematic driving records are assigned to the course by the courts. They are taught the rules of the road for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists in hopes that they will A) walk and bike and use transit instead of driving, and B) be a better driver in regards to pedestrians and cyclists when they do get behind the wheel.

Unfortunately the course is only being offered in a couple counties due to challenges with getting instructors and getting judges to assign it. FBA is working to develop an on-line version of the course, which we expect will enable more county courts to assign the course.

I don't know about a study specifically of unlicensed drivers vs cyclists, but I believe there was such a study done in California not too long ago for unlicensed driver accidents in general. In fact, I heard it on the radio just the other morning.

I believe the study did indeed show a much higher accident fatality rate (and even a much higher accident rate) among unlicensed drivers. Which is not surprising, sadly.

I am so sorry to hear of your injustice. My son was killed on a motorcycle by an unlicensed, uninsured, repeat offender that ran a stop sign and made an illegal turn in front of my son killing him. The cops never drug tested this driver or his four teenage male passengers. The killer walked out of court a free [man?] and grinned at me. Karma may be the only justice we get. I hope you are up and pedaling soon. Good Luck

After reading that Fl. is the deadliest state in the country for bikers, I am wondering if a study has been done concerning ratio of unlicensed and/or suspended license drivers causing death compared to legal drivers?
