FBA hires new executive director

Tim Bustos is FBA’s new executive director effective March 7, 2011. Tim isn’t new to Florida since he began his professional career in Pensacola including eight years as the Regional Bicycle Coordinator for seven counties in Northwest Florida, plus served on the board of the original FBA back in the 1980′s. After spending the past 16 years in California in positions ranging from the City of Davis Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator to transportation planning for a variety of clients, Tim is ready to come home. Tim’s skill set includes extensive experience working with non-profit organizations including fund raising and grant writing to help finance a wide variety of successful projects. His two terms as a board member of the California Bicycle Coalition will also be an asset to moving FBA to the next level.

Tim will hit the ground running (or flying) since on March 8 he’ll travel to Washington DC to represent FBA at the National Bike Summit along with Dan Moser, interim ED and program director. Today is the last day to qualify for the early bird discount so don’t delay if you plan to attend the Summit.

Thanks to all the outstanding candidates who applied for the position. The Search Committee had a difficult task, but ultimately, chose the best person for the job. Laura Hallam’s last official day was 1/31/11, but will assist with the transition and stay involved as a volunteer.

FBA Winter Board Meeting in Oldsmar

Join us January 28-29, 2011 for the FBA Winter Board meeting in Oldsmar. The fun begins Friday, evening from 6:00-8:00 pm for a Meet & Greet at Peggy O’Neill’s Irish Pub in Tampa (SE corner of Hillsborough Avenue and Race Track Road) followed by the meeting on Saturday from 10:00 am-3:30 pm. Advisory Director Becky Afonso will host the meeting at her home located at 250 Strathmore Ave, Oldsmar, FL 34677. A post meeting casual bike ride is planned for 4:00 pm originating from Bicentennial Park. Hybrid or mountain bikes are recommended.

Make the drivers around you behave!

Based on crash data in Fredom from Fear, by expert vehicular cyclist Mighk Wilson; for comparable time periods of activity, travel by bicycle produces 2.1 times less fatalities than travel by auto. In Orlando, only 8% of cyclist-injury crashes between cyclists and motorists involve a legally-operating roadway cyclist. The rest involve sidewalk cyclists and those violating the rules of the road. Learning to avoid virtually all of these crashes is what this course is all about!

This class is specifically designed for riders who want to improve their road skills and have more fun! It covers traffic law, bike equipment, bicycle maintenance, becoming a more confident bicyclist by driving your bike like a motor vehicle and asserting your right to the road through lane positioning and body language. You’ll learn strategy and tactics to use your bike for both recreation and transportation. On the saddle you’ll learn defensive on-bike skills designed to avoid crashes, and do a group ride that hones your road skills. This is a League certified course.

WHEN & WHERE:Class is 1 & 1/2 days: Friday, January 14, 2011, 6:00-9:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 15, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Lakeshore Bicycles & Fitness, 2108 Blanding Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32210

COST: Registration is $40.00. This includes a colorful and informative student manual.

BRING: Friday: Comfortable clothes for classroom. Saturday, come prepared to ride: Bicycle, helmet, sunglasses, water and/or sports drink, lunch or lunch money (Subway sandwiches). We’ll furnish coffee and donuts on arrival. The morning is classroom; the afternoon is on the bike. There will be an opportunity to change to cycling clothing for on-bike activities. Road, hybrid or mountain bikes are all suitable.

2nd Annual Florida Bicycle Club Leadership Workshop

Make sure your bicycle club is represented at the 2nd Annual Florida Bicycle Club Leadership Workshop, Saturday, November 20, 2010, in Clermont in conjunction with the 31st annual Horrible Hundred. This year, we decided to expand the workshop to include leaders other than just presidents, plus extend the time period from two to three (originally posted as four) hours to allow more time for interactive discussion. This workshop is for YOU so make sure your club is represented by forwarding this information to club leaders.

Location: ROOM: Valencia at the Citrus Tower, 141 N. Hwy. 27, Clermont

2010 Florida Bicycle/Pedestrian Law Enforcement Guides are available

Florida Bicycle/Pedestrian Law Enforcement Guides reflecting 2010 statute changes are now available, including the mandatory bike lane law effective September 1. This handy booklet updated annually to reflect statute changes has been distributed to nearly 100,000 individuals since 2001. You can download a copy or request copies for you and your friends by contacting FBA.

New text includes:
Roadway position [§316.2065(5)]

A person operating a bicycle on a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic under the conditions existing must ride in the lane marked for bicycle use or, if no lane is marked for bicycle use, as close as practicable [safe] to the roadway’s right-hand curb or edge, except under any of the following situations:

* when passing another vehicle
* when preparing for a left turn
* when reasonably necessary to avoid conditions including (but not limited to), a fixed or moving object, parked or moving vehicle, pedestrian, animal, or surface hazard
* when a lane is too narrow for a bicycle and another vehicle to travel safely side by side.

A cyclist operating on a one-way street with two or more marked traffic lanes may ride as close to the left-hand edge of the roadway as practicable.
