Dear Mr. Weiss:

Unfortunately, the Governor does not have line-item veto power over a bill such as HB 971. While I am sympathetic to the cause of those afflicted with MS, bicyclists, pedestrians and anti-drunk driving advocates must stay the course and urge Governor Crist to veto HB 971 in its entirety.

As a concerned Florida citizen, I worked diligently day and night to include language in HB 971 which provides relief to Florida residents with auto immune diseases who operate motor vehicles. The proposed amendment eases restrictions on sunscreen shading requirements to residents/patients whose doctors sign a DMV form opining that for heat and light tolerance purposes, an exception to the proscribed tinting restriction must be made.

I am a MS patient. We are great bicycle supporters and welcome several national bicycle fund raising events dedicated to raising funds for MS research.

I am asking your group to modify its approach and ask Governor Crist to issue a line item veto (and not a blanket veto over HB 971) only over that provision that you object to (exclusive bicycle path riding). By doing so, we can maintain an excellent amendment aimed to provide relief to 1000's of Florida auto immune disease patients/residents while aiming to advance your group's purpose of striking the objectionable language concerning bicycle paths from the proposed legislation. There are many excellent provisions in HB 971. The bill passed unanimously (across the aisle) in both the House and Senate.

Please feel free to publish this letter to your group,

Keep in mind this bill contains much more than just the mandatory bike lane use provision. It's the annual omnibus highway safety bill which contains lots of various changes to traffic laws.

They had the nerve to send it to the Governor right before Bike Month. I hope their VERY poor timing has been good for you in the press.

It is also vital to note that HB 971 will allow 4 time convicted drunk drivers to get their drivers licenses back. There is no question that drunk drivers can have deadly consequences for bicyclists (see: http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2010/01/musician_carlos_bertonatti_cha.php).

Please visit www.veto971.com for more information on the provision of HB 971 which deals with serial drunk drivers getting their drivers licenses back and join the Facebook group "Stop Drunk Drivers and Veto House Bill 971" as a show of support (see: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=113209808719378&v=info).

Thank you - Joseph Abromowitz
