Hurricane Irma aftermath

We’re reaching out to our members to wish you safety and comfort following the extreme weather brought on by Hurricane Irma. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones.

The Florida Bicycle Association, headquartered in Oldsmar, FL, survived Hurricane Irma and is slowly resuming operations.

We wish to update our members on a few matters going forward:

ClubExpress membership renewals
FBA utilizes an online membership database via ClubExpress.  ClubExpress automatically generates renewal notices via email or snailmail as part of their service.  FBA understands that renewing your membership may be the least of your concerns at this time.  Please disregard these automated notices.  We will reach out to members, including those that have expired during this period, once the majority of the state has powered restored and back to normal operations.

FBA Autumn Messenger
Florida Bicycle Association managed to get the autumn Messenger to the printer prior to Hurricane Irma making landfall in Florida.  However, there will be a delay in deliver for numerous reasons.  Should you not receive your issue by October 1st (and you have mail service at that time), please send an email to our new membership director, Elijah Rodgers at Elijah@floridabicycle.org to request a resend.

2018 Florida Legislative Session
The 2018 Florida legislative session starts January 9.  Interim committee meetings were cancelled this week, but FBA continues to monitor the process prior to the start of session.

We are currently following these filed bills:

SB 116 / HB 117:  Operation of VehiclesRequiring drivers to vacate lanes closest to, or reduce speed and pass, vulnerable road users, authorized emergency, sanitation, and utility service vehicles or workers, and wrecker operators under certain circumstances, subject to certain requirements, etc. PDF of SB 116.

SB 72 / SB 90 / HB 121:  Texting While Driving: Revises short title & legislative intent; revises penalties for violations of provisions re: texting while driving; provides enhanced penalties for violations committed in school zones & crossings; requires law enforcement agencies to adopt policies prohibiting racial profiling in enforcement; removes requirement that enforcement be accomplished as secondary action.  PDF of HB 121

Complete Streets Savvy, or CSS, is a general bicycle educational presentation.  The purpose is to provide basic information with regards to the Florida Department of Transportation’s adoption of Complete Streets policy and how cyclists and motorists can share the road safely. This presentation runs 10 – 15 minutes and is designed for legislators, county and city elected officials, civic organizations and other entities that meet regularly and need informative content.  There is no fee.  Visit the FBA Presentations page to see our complete line of signature presentations.

Bike Florida and Florida Bicycle Association share a common cause in bicycle education for residents and visitors to the Sunshine State.  Share the Road license plate proceeds benefit Bike Florida and Florida Bicycle Association to further these bicycle educational efforts.  What’s on your motor vehicle?  Get the Share the Road license plate!
